Little Friends

This Branch of the SLGGA is for girls between the ages of 8 to 12. Little Friends are inspired to learn new tasks and activities, explore society and to be independent. They also work in groups, this will improve their social skills.

This Branch was established in 1917 along with the Guides and the Rangers. Initially it was known as “Rosebuds”. Later they were known as “Brownies”, the title then used in Britain for the Junior Members.

As the concept of “wise old owl” as the Leader for the Brownies Pack was not favoured by many in the country after careful deliberation the name was changed to “Little Friends”, in 1961.

Little Friends has a Pack system with a minimum number of 12 to a maximum number of 36 Little Friends. They are grouped into sixes; each Six has 6 Little Friends. Each six has a sixer leader and a second. Each pack can have a maximum of 6 sixes. Sylvanna and Sylvette, who are adult volunteer leaders, are in charge of the pack.

Meetings

A Pack generally meets once a week.

Challenges

The Little Friends’ program is developed by a series of Challenges and Achievement Patches. Each Little Friend develops according to the amount of effort she puts in. Age is a determining factor for some Challenges.

Who can join

Any little girl who is between the ages of 8-12 can be a Little Friend as long as she is willing to do her best, to keep the Promise, she will make when she joins the Guide Family.

What’s next

When a Little Friend reaches the age limit, she can continue her adventure by joining the Guide Branch which is for girls aged 12-17.
